A week of work experience had been stressful; I would wake in the mornings dreading the dull 9 till 5 schedule I had to endure. For the past 4 days I had been working in an accountant’s office; photocopying, taking notes, sorting spread sheets. If you can think of any other mind numbing activities, I probably did those too. There was only one perk that I would spend my whole day thinking about and looking forward to.
Every day when I stepped out of the office at the end of the day and made the walk to the nearest tube station, my heartbeat would increase dramatically and I would frantically make sure I looked somehow presentable. It was now my last journey back home and I was hoping that he would be waiting on the platform for the 5.13pm train like he had for the past few days.
As I reached the top of the stairs that led to the train station I saw the spiky black hair and chiselled good looks. He was looking the other way and even though we had exchanged no words there had been a couple of moments where we would accidently catch each other’s eye and it would be held for a second too long before I would look away in embarrassment.
Walking past him, I was about to look towards him and smile at him in recognition when the familiar sound of Jessie J started playing from the depths of my bag. Immediately I dropped my bag to the floor and started foraging around trying to find the source of the music, finally I felt the familiar shape in my grasp and pulled it out, pressing the accept button and bringing the phone to my ear.
‘Hello’ I hadn’t even thought to look at the caller ID before accepting and picking my bag up walking to the wall so I was out of the way of the path.
‘Hey Tayler’ my friend Naomi called down the phone. ‘So, do you want to meet up?’
‘Naomi, I’m in London you idiot. I told you last week!’
‘Oh right yeah, well can I see you on Saturday or something? I’m so bored!’
‘Yep, that’s fine. I’ve got to go; I’m just waiting for my train. Byee’
‘See ya’
I ended the call and placed the phone back in my bag, chuckling quietly to myself at how ditzy Naomi could be sometimes. Straightening myself up I checked the time on my watch, it read 5.07; still 6 minutes to wait.
‘So, you like Jessie J?’ a voice spoke from beside me, immediately my head turned to the side to see that the boy that I had only shared eye contact thus far was now standing next to me and making conversation.
After my breathing hitched in my throat and I managed to calm myself enough to talk I replied.
‘Urm, yeah, you?’
‘She’s alright, I guess’
A short silence followed, my mind had gone completely blank as I frantically tried to think up something to say or talk about. Nothing.
‘I’ve noticed you’ve been getting the same train as me for the past week’ the boy spoke up, ‘My name’s Zayn’
I turned my posture towards him and smiled, ‘I’ve been doing work experience for the past week. Today’s my last day actually’
‘Right, so it’s good that I plucked up the courage to talk to you today isn’t it?’ he spoke, his deep voice sending butterflies flying around me.
I let out a breathy laugh, looking down towards the ground. ‘Yeah I suppose it is’
I smiled at him as we regained eye contact, his chocolate brown ones morphing into my ones. Subconsciously biting my lip I noticed the train quickly pulling into the station over Zayns shoulder.
The train pulled in and the doors opened allowing the passengers waiting to make their exit off onto the station. I then walked onto the train and placed myself onto one of the empty seats, looking beside me to see that Zayn had sat in the seat next to me.
‘So, do I get to know your name?’ he enquired, resting his arm on the head rest above my head so the protruding muscles in his arms were clearly visible.
‘Tayler’ I smiled at him.
‘It suits you’
I laughed at this, ‘How does my name suit me then?’
‘Er, I don’t know. It just does’ I raised my eyebrows at him, ‘I guess it’s a gorgeous name for a gorgeous girl’
I looked away, my cheeks glowing a deep crimson. ‘That was cheesy’ I murmured.
‘It’s true though, I’ve been trying to think of something to say to you all week’ Zayn replied, equally just as shy.
‘Well, I’m glad you plucked up the courage’ I smiled at him, looking into his amazing eyes again.
‘So am I’ he said whilst dropping his arm from the headrest above my head to rest gently over my shoulders. He placed a short, sweet kiss on the crown of my head before murmuring something into my hair.
I leant away from him and looked at him questioningly having missed what he had just said. He obviously caught onto this and repeated himself.
‘I’d really like to get to know you Tayler, would you like to go get a coffee or something’
I nodded shyly whilst Zayn leant his head in and placed another kiss against my skin, this time instead of on my forehead he placed his full lips against mine and kissed me. It was the first kiss of many to come.
